Preventing truck and carhauling accidents

6/13/2011 Trucking Groups Call on NHTSA to Examine Truck Crashworthiness Standards

American Trucking Associations and the Owner Operator Independent Drivers Association together called on the federal government to begin researching standards for crashworthiness for heavy trucks.

"NHTSA has continuously developed crashworthiness standards for automobiles and light trucks, but to date has generally not applied crashworthiness standards to commercial trucks," the two groups wrote in a June 6 letter to David Strickland, head of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. "We believe there may be opportunities to enhance the survivability of professional truck drivers if appropriate, research-based, uniform standards are developed."

Baltimore towing scandal continues....

June, 2011

The Baltimore Sun

Second Baltimore officer pleads guilty in towing scandal

The second of 17 Baltimore police officers charged with extortion in an alleged kickback scheme involving a towing company pleaded guilty in federal court on Tuesday, according to the Maryland U.S. Attorney’s Office.

Officer Jermaine Rice, 28, of Woodstock, faces up to 20 years in prison and a $250,000 fine when he is sentenced Sept. 23. His colleague, Officer David Reeping, 41, pleaded guilty to the same charge on June 8.
The officers were arrested in February as part of a sweeping indictment involving widespread corruption on the force. Many of the officers were assigned to the Northeast District. An additional 14 officers who were implicated were suspended but not criminally charged.

Federal prosecutors allege that the officers directed motorists involved in car accidents or with stranded vehicles to Majestic Towing in Rosedale, saying company officials would waive towing fees, help them with insurance and save them money hauling their cars using the city’s designated “medallion” towing companies.

Orange Beach, Alabama

Orange Beach Mayor Tony Kennon says a local towing company is price gouging drivers who get towed from private parking lots. Kennon says Orange Beach Towing is charging drivers more than 200 dollars to retrieve their vehicles.

Known as "trespass towing"...the owner of a private parking lot...usually a hotel, condo or resort complex...has a car towed without the owner's consent. The charge to the owner of the car? 200 bucks. That's double what a tow would cost if your car breaks down or if you're involved in a wreck and Kennon says that's not right.

"If you tow without the owner's consent, there's got to be some type of flat rate without holding the car hostage," says Kennon. "They're essentially holding the car hostage and charging drivers whatever they want."

Better tie down this load tight....

I don't think there are industry awards for the largest specialized haul or the largest flatbed BUT if there were I think this would be the winner. I saw this online and realized it was not photoshopped but carry an actual jet that crashed in the Hudson river.

Rigging for the US Armed Forces

Rigging Lifting and Transport: Armed Forces Equipment

The picture speaks for itself. One of the most important, albeit less glamorous  aspects of military engagement is engineering and construction in the theatre of war. Like all cargo, this has to be bound properly for transportation. Notice the use of the heavy chain with the level binder. The forklift is rigged to not move at all.
